The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at SLAC is the first hard X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL). It is capable of producing 10 million shots per day, running at 120Hz. The upcoming European XFEL will multiply this by more than a factor 100.
The LCLS beam is billions of times brighter than 3rd generation synchrotron sources and its pulses are extremely short. These spectacular improvements enable new experiments, including femtosecond nano-crystallography and ultrafast imaging of single particles by X-ray diffraction.
There has been an explosion of interest in nano-crystallography, due to the promise of higher data quality brought by reduced radiation damage, and in the single particle field the first 3D biological structure, of the giant mimivirus, has just been published.
In this talk I will present the history, progress, and prospects of ultrafast single particle diffraction imaging at XFELs along with the birth of femtosecond nano-crystallography.
