The SBGrid Consortium at Harvard Medical School has an immediate opening for a Software Curator. The curator will engage with a dynamic and rapidly advancing research community to meet their expanding needs for biomedical computing. He or she will work as a member of a research computing team that also interfaces with the Harvard Medical School Research Computing Group and the Open Science Grid.
Key Responsibilities and duties:
SBGrid supports a variety of biological laboratories by providing a tested and refined software infrastructure that includes a large library of scientific applications. This software is written in a variety of languages (Fortran, C, C++, Python, Java, Perl, Tcl/Tk and many sh/csh scripts) and built with any one of a number of different build systems (autotools, cmake, scons, homebrew shell scripts/makefiles, setuptools, etc).
The primary responsibilities of the position will be installing, configuring and testing biomedical software on Linux and OS X systems for use on workstations and computational clusters at biomedical research centers around the world.
Additional responsibilities will include collaborating with members of the research community to fine-tune computational pipelines, working with scientific software developers to integrate new applications into the existing software collection, developing various software management tools, and participating in educational activities. The exact breakdown between these responsibilities will depend on your background and interests.
Academic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, bioinformatics, computer engineering or technology-related discipline; or a PhD in one of the STEM disciplines; or an equivalent combination of education plus relevant experience. 5-7 years of research computing or related experience (possibly including your years in PhD training).
Work Experience and Skills:
Requires working knowledge of at least one programming or scripting language and sh or csh shell scripting experience. Knowledge of how to drive a compiler and linker as well as an understanding of shared libraries. Motivated and independent contributor with strong attention to detail and an enthusiasm for hard problems and mastering new skills. Familiarity with Python or other programming languages. Strong knowledge of Linux and/or OS X operating systems. The successful candidate will have excellent organizational skills and be able to prioritize and complete work with little supervision. Proven project and/or program management skills. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills. Ability to communicate clear English instructions is critical, since the majority of user support occurs over email. Ability to work with discretion.
