SBGrid is launching the SBGrid CryoEM Cloud Tournament, a global competition in which teams will process the same confidential, unpublished CryoEM dataset in an AWS cloud environment and compete to answer the biological question posed by the dataset as accurately and efficiently as possible.
The tournament is open broadly to structural biologists, CryoEM researchers, developers, faculty, trainees, and research staff worldwide. SBGrid membership is not required.
Participating teams will receive access to a preconfigured SBGrid cloud environment with CPU/GPU resources, storage, software, and technical support. Computational credits are provided by AWS.
Teams will be evaluated on:
- structural accuracy and quality
- biological interpretation
- computational cost and efficiency
- reproducibility and scientific usefulness
The Tournament Judging Committee includes:
Mihnea Bostina (University of Otago), Bharat Reddy (HotSpot Therapeutics), Goran Bajic (Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai),
and Rubén Sánchez-García (IE University), bringing expertise in CryoEM, structural biology, computational methods, and
structure-guided discovery.
We anticipate selecting approximately 12 teams, with the competition running for approximately 1–2 months. Winning teams will have opportunities to present their approaches at several venues over the coming year, and joint and individual publications will also be considered.

Submitting the form is not a binding commitment. We will contact pre-registered groups directly as the competition details and timeline are finalized. Because the dataset is unpublished, participating teams will be required to maintain strict confidentiality.
