Abstract:Europe has recently launched "Instruct" as an initiative to coordinate the development of key infrastructures in the field of Structural Biology. The general Coordination is in Oxford (Dr. David Stuart), while the Center in charge of image processing in electron microscopy is in Madrid, at the Biocomputing Unit (BCU) of the Spanish National Center for Biotechnology.
During the years the BCU has contributed to virtually all stages of the 3DEM Image Processing Pipeline, with particular emphasis in the analysis of flexibility and conformation changes, with methods such as KenDerSOM, ML3D and, more recently, CL2D, that will be briefly reviewed. All these methods are accessible withing our software suite XMIPP, which is now being enhanced significantly in its new release.
Currently we are embarked in a large scale technological project as part of Instruct, developing a new web-accessible Platform capable of launching image processing workflows involving different software suites in an easy and fully traceable manner, that we call Scipion. Scipion is organized around an Ontological DataBase, constructed over a particular simplified 3D Image Processing Ontology, and is expected to start operations at the end of 2012.
